12-04-0610.1Elk & Beaver. Sunny - around 10 degrees. Moving average 5.6.
12-04-07Last year I started to ride in March a few weeks after going home, within weeks after my stroke. On the first ride in March, I had a moment of instability at the Saanich Road crossing on the Lochside related to disengaging the clips to stop for traffic. It was momentary and did not deter me from riding. In early May I perceived some dizziness while walking - carrying something heavy.I became concerned that I was not managing my balance and that low blood pressure due to medications was affecting my balance. I spent time walking until I was sure I could maintain pace over distance. I started driving and got used to velocity and traffic. I have goals to get back on the bike this year.
12-04-07Dragon Boat - open practice
12-04-08Y33.9Goose-Lochside to Lochside Park (fastball fields and soccer pitches beside the Cordova Bay Golf club near the Matttick's farm mall). Cloudy. Wind from the north and east. Detour at the end of the Johnson Street Bridge for the construction site of the new bridge.
12-04-10Dragon Boat Team, first practice
12-04-12Dragon Boat Team practice - rain and cold.
12-04-1410.1Elk & Beaver.Moving average 5.6. Today the GPS calculated 10.1 km distance as did last summer. It has shown 9.9 though the winter.
12-04-22Y39.6Downtown to the Sussex, then on the Goose-Lochside to Michell's farm at Ocean View. AM. Sunny, light cloud. Congested. Skaters, dogwalkers, family groups with little ones wobbling about. Preoccuped/focussed soccer parents filling the lot at the pitches out at the golf course. The distance is not precise. I put a new battery in the odometer, which reset it to miles and reset the wheel circumference. I had to reconstruct/estimate the distance, taking the downtown side trips and the bridge detour into account.
12-04-22Dragon Boat - open practice
12-05-06Y63.5Goose-Lochside to Sidney. Sunny. Sunday AM and early PM. Detours downtown at the start due to the Navy parade for the Battle of the Atlantic. Side trip down Hunt|Welch and Martindale.
12-05-13Y65.6Goose to Sooke, past Rocky Point Road, past the Free Range Chicken signs. Sunny, warm.
12-05-19Y53.1Sunny, clouds in the distance. Coastal route to Mt Douglas, Royal Oak, across to Beaver Lake, on the trail by the lakes, the shoulder of the Pat Bay Highway and Elk Lake Rd back to Royal Oak, then on the trails - Lochside and Goose - back in.
12-05-26The rides are going well. The rides on the dedicated trails involve passing between posts every time the trail crosses a road or transitions between sections shared with cars and the dedicated sections. I have always seen the posts but, with a few exceptions never consciously tried to aim for a particular line or path. This year - it must be a post stroke "deficit" - I am edgy about the line but working through the nerves.
12-05-26Dragon Boat: GRPC Gorge Sprints
12-05-27Y54.4Sunny, turning to cloud around noon. Strong south wind. Coastal type of trip to Mt Douglas then by Royal Oak to Lochside and out to the Saanich museum, and back.

11-12-3110.1Elk & Beaver. Moving Average 5.6.

I had a stroke in January. I was unconscious for a few days, hospitalized for a couple of weeks and off work for a few months.

I was hypertensive.

I thought I had been cooking healthy i.e. not using more salt than a recipe required etc.

My blood pressure dropped with medication during my recovery. My blood pressure got into a good range when I eliminated salt by switching to no sodium added broths and vegetables in cooking, baking bread in a bread machine on a lower salt formula for the recipes I was using and avoiding fast food, processed meats, cheese and processed (factory cooked) products.

2010 Log

2010 Log

10-03-20Y40.5Michell's Farm (Island View Road). Out and back along the Lochside Trail. First ride of the year. Sunny, above 10 degrees, cool breeze from the north east.
10-03-28Canoe course - vckc- Lake Water level 1 - basic tandem paddling strokes. On the Gorge.
10-04-03Canoe course - vckc- Lake Water level 1 & 2. Rescues in the Esquimalt Rec Center pool. Lake Water level 2 (solo canoe) on the Gorge.
10-04-10VCKC Canoes. Day paddle from Pat Bay around the end of the Peninsula and out in at the park in Sidney. An interesting day in relatively calm water the day after a huge storm.
10-04-18Y55.4The Goose to Bennett Road. There has been some construction since last fall - there is new asphalt as far as Wales. It is now all paved from downdown to Wales, except for 700 m. of gravel east of Burnside. Out and back, turned off at Tillicum on return, through Esquimalt. Mixed sun and cloud, 12 degrees, quite windy.
10-04-22Y70.8Almost to Sidney. The forecast changed in last day. It turned out to be sunny and about 12 degrees at 9 AM, and stayed clear, with a haze and distant cloud over the Olympics. The wind got brisk, mainly from the east, more from the south closer to the Strait in the early PM. I did the basic loop around the shore and up to Mt Douglas, across Royal Oak to Elk Lake, along the lakeshore. Lots of horses - there was an equestrian poker derby. Out of the park and then along Oldfield, East Saanich Road to Saanichton (stopping for coffee at the former Robin's) and down to McTavish, then back home by the Lochside. The new cranks are working well. I have little twinges but no discomfort, if I stretch and flex to work out the kinks in my right hip before I ride.
10-04-25Y5Local in James Bay. Three short rides to test the location of the cleats in my new shoes.
10-06-20Y70.2The Goose to Matheson Lake and back. About 31 k. on asphalt, the rest on gravel, evergreen needles and horseshit. There has been rain, so the dust was not a problem. At the western end of the ride, the roadbed is soft in places. It was cool day, windy, from the east, mainly cloudy. Parts of the ride were in shade. There are some great views out in East Sooke - I need to remember to take a camera. The last 8 k on the ride out seem easy - with wind and grade. The ride back was tougher, with fatigue, running into an east wind, and the train grade for the first 7 or 8 k. after turning around. The shoes seem to be set up well. I may tinker with cleat angle on the left to get the knee and ankle lined up a little better.
10-07-04Y60The Goose - 30 k out and back. Cloudy most in the AM and most of the early PM. Fairly windy. I have taken a few weeks off. It has been to take time for work related travel, to attend to housework and yardwork, to canoe (a camping trip in May and several outings in my new Clipper Solitude) or to avoid crappy weather - rain and wind. I had some problems today with endurance, but my chronic complaints about right with hip, knee and foot not, fortunately, being a factor.
10-07-110Wind, some rain, work. No ride
10-07-180Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival. 2 day event. No ride
10-07-25Y63.1Lochside to Sidney. Sunny most of the day. Strong east winds, with a little veering. The start and finish were held up by a tourist event, Deuce days. Belleville was closed in front of the Leg. Government was closed from Superior to past the Empress. Wharf was closed. This caused a gridlock and isolated James Bay from the rest of Victoria.
10-09-05Y67.7Sunny day, hot, intense bright sun. Temperature about 24, humid. Winds up to ESE 10 kph, steady, with some sustained pressure in exposed areas. It was the Beach Drive route to Mt. Douglas, Royal Oak across to Elk Lake, Lakeside trail, Oldfield etc to Saanichton, Wallace along the ridge, then down to and across the Pat Bay Hy., onto Lochside and back into Victoria.
10-09-18Y59.1Galloping Goose to Taylor Road, return. Cloudy, mid teen temp. Long sleeve jersey, shorts.

A loop on Circle Drive, exit the park on Douglas, down Toronto to Menzies.
09-05-02OC6. Sat. Race. Brotchie. Toughest thing I have tried in years.
09-05-03Y44.4Sunday. Sunny, about 15 degrees at 10:30 am. Windy, from the SE. Sunny, high cirrus cloud, heavier cloud on the horizon, closing in towards noon. Lochside, Hunt Valley side loop on the way out. Back on Lochside over the swing bridge. A ride across Saanich to Gorge Road, down Gorge & Hillside to Quadra, down Cook to Dallas and home.

09-07-05Y79.8Sidney. Sunday morning. Sun and cloud, light east winds. I went out by Dallas & Beach, on the shore around Oak Bay and Gordon Head, to Mt Douglas. West on Royal Oak to Elk Lake, along the west shore trail, out of the park onto Oldfield. North to Keating X, and by E. Saanich to Stelly's X. Across to the shore, North to Sidney, hitting 50 in front of Serious Coffee. Return by the Lochside trail. It was a good work out but I noticed some strain and pain in the right hip. I am wondering about changing to a 170 crank from the 175. 170 feels right on my road bike, I am not tall and I don't have long legs. I should have stuck with 170 when I upgraded the crank in '04. That may account for several problems.
09-07-120.0Folk Festival in Courtenay.
09-07-19Y65.4Galloping Goose, Sunday AM. Sunny, hot, dry and dusty. The first 12 k were on pavement or packed gravel but then, out to about 33 k were on loose gravel, with the reverse being inverse. Hard ride. The loose gravel sucked the wheels. Major cleaning at the end.
09-07-26Y66.7Nearly out to Sidney. Sunny, hot, windy. Lochside to Royal Oak, across to the lakes and along the trail, out on Oldfield to Keating X. Staying in the shade, trying to find light cool sea breezes, Brentwood Bay, along W Saanich to Wallace to Stelly's X. Back to BB. North to Mount Newton X. This stretch of W Saanich has a stiff climb and first 50 meters on Mount Newton are wobbly. Across the penisula to Saanichton. Skyline end of Wallace to the Pat Bay. Great view of James & Sidney and the American islands and dozens of sailboats from the ridge. Lochside and south into the wind to Victoria. Branched off the trail at Quadra, uphill on Q to Cook, then by Cook to the water, and Dallas towards Ogden, home. Twinges in the r. hip. Bonking; lack of calories, ansd heat. Should have left at 8:30 AM instead of 10:45.
09-08-02Y69.7Beacon Hill, Fairfield to Foul Bay, Cordova Bay to U Vic, Mt. Douglas, Royal Oak to W. Saanich. W. Saanich to Brentwood Bay for the hills. Wallace to Saanichton, E. 09-08-16Y64.7Glorious day. Clear, sunny, 22 degrees. Some wind off the water, crossing, sometimes in my face. Rode to Sidney by the Lochside Trail, with the Hunt Valley loop in Central Saanich. Then back. A couple of pauses, no breaks, steady riding.
09-08-23KA81.9Sunny, mixed clouds, 20-22 degrees.Winds from the southeast, shifting to south. Across Beacon Hill and Fairfield, Foul Bay and the edge of Oak Bay to Mt Doug. Royal Oak to Elk Lake, out the far end of the Park onto W. Saanich. Feeling bouncy on the road bike, I took on the climbs of Old W Saanich, coming out on W. Saanich at Brentwood Bay. Across Saanich on Keating X into the breeze, Central Saanich Road to Mt. Newton X, and across the highway to Lochside at 49k on the meter. A couple k of gravel, and then the cobbled old asphalt in Hunt Valley. A bit of the trail, breaking off onto Cordova Bay Road at Matticks, going Cordova Bay, Blenkinsop, MacKenzie to U Vic, then down Foul Bay to Fairfield, crossing to Cook, and back to Dallas. Good to be on the road bike. It fits, it's light.
09-08-28Y7.2Russ Hay Cycle on Hillside Ave for new crank, cables. AM sunny. Return in the PM cloudy and threatening to storm.
09-08-29Y5.8Neighbourhood. Short cruises to test seat position and other adjustments. Sunny warm Sat AM.
09-08-30OC6 Crew. 17.5 paddle from Oak Bay to the Club on water I haven't seen too much.
09-09-13Y55.1Sunny Sunday. 20 degrees. Around Oak Bay and Gordon Head to Mt Douglas, Lochside out past the golf course and through Hunt Valley, back out to the Lochside, turned around at Michell's farm. This was a with the new cranks and the adjustments. It was good. There were some twinges in the right hip. My thighs were sore which goes with spinning too much but there was no punishment and there were rewards for the changes.
09-09-13OC6 Sat. OC6 Race. Island Iron, Comox. Hot sunny day, calm water. Tough. Me, Herb, Max, Laurie, Dave
09-09-20Y62.5Sunny, Sunday, about 18 degrees. The wind was mild ENE at 10 AM but turned to SE or S near noon. The route was Lochside, with Hunt valley, to Sidney, same on the way back. Wind in my face both ways, more on the return, only a few knots but seemed to punch up along the Esquimalt shoreline. Still testing after the changes to this bike a few weeks ago, and perhaps doing some rehab. I had some tightness in both hips starting out, but rode nicely with some improvement in the average speed for this trip.
09-10-04Y61.1Sunny, Sunday, temperature got to 20 later in the day. Very windy, N about 25 K, gusting. Rode to Sidney by Lochside, with Hunt Valley outbound. Pounded by wind, even in the shelter of the trail outbound. Some boost homeward bound. I was working through the bike changes again. I switched to the Shimano black cleat after using the silver one for years. This locks in better - and no embarassing tumblers when slowing down or stopping. The new crank length and seat position seem to be making for a pain-free ride.
09-10-12*RR23.0Winnipeg. Mike's house to the Grace Hospital by Wellington Crescent, back by Lodge and Assiniboine. About 3 degrees, cloudy, some snow and sleet. Wet. *Mike, Steve, me

08-07-20Y67.1Sunday, cloudless sunny day. Windy, with strong sea breezes from the south and east. A straight run out the Goose to Rocky Point Road and back. I was aiming for some shade and some brush to cut the breeze. Partial success. Dusty, the trail is gravel from about 14 k out to the turnaround and back. I had a major session with the chain cleaning fluids and tools on my return with the chain rings off to remove dirt and wax and dust. I have taken to White Lightning – run that and wipe the excess off in a shop towel. Good for a century or more, self cleaning.
