1000 Kilometers

Mike and I have each managed to ride 1000 k since we started riding in March, up to Monday night, May 30. We added 34 more on May 31. We thought we were riding less this year than last year. I thought we had a lot more rain this year, especially on the weekends when we would ordinarily take half a day for a long ride. We have had several rainy spells, and have lost some weekend rides. when it has been dry we have been riding almost every evening, for 30-35 or even 40 kilometers, for 3 or 4 consecutive nights.

It turns out we have logged slightly more distance by the end of May this year, afer checking against Mike’s 2004 log. Last year we lost 10 days in May when it snowed. Last year we reached 2000 k by the 12th or 13th of July. Our routine was 2 or three evening rides, 30 to 40 k and a Sunday morning ride, between 65 and 100 k. That’s about 700-800 k in a month, depending on rain, wind and other commitments. To get 1000 k a month will take some extra effort and time.

You’re right. Last year I managed over 1,000 Km by this point. In 2003 I managed one month where I did 1,000 Km. Too much cycling! My goal is 500 Km a month on average. If I do more, great. I should at least hit 3,000 Km this year, roughly the same as last year, but more than 1,000 Km less than the year before.

  2. I agree with Steve, that 1000km a month is too much if you have a life. Since i don’t really have one, perhaps I will try for that in July when I am unemployed and on ‘vacation’. A ride in the morning, some work around the house and then the usual evening and weekend rides.
